Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a young actor for her children’s acting headshots UK session, creating images ready for her Spotlight profile.
At just 10 years old, she brought such natural confidence and personality to the shoot - and it was all about capturing that in a way that felt authentic, relaxed, and true to her.
When it comes to children’s headshots, especially for Spotlight, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s personality and how you can show they will be suitable for different roles.
What Makes Great Children’s Acting Headshots UK
When shooting children’s acting headshots UK, there are a few key things that really matter:
Natural expressions (not forced smiles)
Clear, simple backgrounds
Soft, flattering light
A focus on the child’s personality
Casting directors aren’t looking for overly styled or edited images, they want to see who the child really is.
Keeping the Shoot Natural & Relaxed
For this shoot, I kept everything as relaxed as possible.
This is especially important when creating children’s acting headshots UK, because:
Kids can feel pressure quickly
Over-direction can make images look stiff
The best moments happen naturally
We spent time chatting, laughing, and letting her personality come through, which always results in the best images.
Spotlight Headshots: What Casting Directors Look For
When it comes to children’s acting headshots UK for Spotlight, simplicity is key.
Casting directors want:
A clear, well-lit image
Minimal distractions
A true representation of the child
This means:
No heavy editing
No dramatic styling
Just clean, honest portraits
What Should Your Child Wear For Their Acting Headshots?
Outfits play a big role, but they should never overpower the child.
For this shoot, we kept things simple:
Neutral tones
No logos or simple/no patterns
Comfortable clothing
This keeps the focus exactly where it should be (on the child). She also brought along multiple hats/hoods, which helped elevate her personality. This is a great idea, although images with extra accessories should never be the bulk of your shoot.
Building Confidence During the Shoot
Confidence is everything in children’s acting headshots in the UK.
At the start of the shoot, there’s always a little bit of nervous energy - and that’s completely normal.
My approach is to:
Keep things light and friendly
Give gentle direction
Let the child settle into the experience
Within minutes, she was completely comfortable and we got chatting about what she's up to at the minute, and that’s when the best photos happen.

FAQ: Children’s Acting Headshots UK
What age can children get acting headshots? Children of all ages can have headshots, but it’s especially useful once they begin auditioning.
Do children need professional headshots for Spotlight? Yes, a clear, professional headshot is essential for a strong profile. I have high quality studio lights in my photography studio in Tonbridge, so we can capture clean bright images to attract casting directors' eyes.
How long does a session take? I have three headshot packages that I offer which range from 30-90 mins, allowing time for the child to relax better and so we can get a range of different backdrops, hairstyles and clothes in the longer shoots.
What if my child is shy? That’s completely normal, I create a relaxed environment to help them feel comfortable quickly.
