Personal Branding Photography for Musicians in Kent

When you think of personal branding photography, you might immediately think of business owners, LinkedIn headshots or someone sitting at a desk with their laptop.

But personal branding photography isn't just for traditional businesses.

For musicians, artists and other creatives, photographs are a huge part of how people see and connect with you.

Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph Eleanor Wilson, creating a collection of personal branding images that could be used across her social media, website and promotional material.

Rather than creating a set of traditional headshots, the aim was to capture photographs that felt creative, natural and true to who she is as an artist.

And that's what I love about photographing musicians.

There really isn't one formula.

Why do musicians need personal branding photography?

As a musician, your photographs are often one of the first things someone sees.

It could be on Instagram, Spotify, your website, a gig poster, a press article or when someone is deciding whether to book you for an event.

Your photography therefore becomes part of your overall brand.

You don't necessarily need one single "perfect" headshot.

You need a collection of images that you can use in different places and for different purposes.

For example, you might need:

  • A strong portrait for your website

  • A profile photograph for Instagram

  • Images for promotional posts

  • Photographs for upcoming releases

  • Press and PR images

  • Images for posters and flyers

  • Behind-the-scenes style content

  • Landscape photographs for website banners

  • More relaxed photographs for social media

This is where personal branding photography can be really useful.

Instead of relying on the same photograph every time you need to post something, you can have a whole gallery of images ready to go.

A personal branding photoshoot for a musician

For Eleanor, we wanted to create photographs that felt like her rather than forcing them into a traditional corporate-style branding shoot.

The idea was to create a mixture of portraits, more relaxed photographs and images that could work across different platforms.

We had a 2 hour session that was split between studio portraits and outdoor portraits. We found Eleanor didn't really feel like herself in the studio and so we went to photograph at a common near to Tonbridge. She felt much more relaxed and at ease in the outdoors and we got some beautiful images to represent this.

This is one of my favourite ways to approach personal branding photography.

Rather than spending the whole session standing in one place and looking at the camera, we can move around, try different ideas and create photographs that tell more of a story. She knew she'd prefer to shoot outdoors but still wanted a few more professional headshots in the studio so having this split session meant we could get this.

Your photographs should reflect your music

One of the most important things when photographing a musician is thinking about their identity as an artist.

Your photographs don't necessarily need to literally show you playing an instrument.

Instead, we can think about the overall feeling you want people to get when they see your images.

Are you:

  • Edgy and alternative?

  • Soft and atmospheric?

  • Bold and colourful?

  • Minimal and modern?

  • Dark and dramatic?

  • Fun and energetic?

  • Laid-back and natural?

Your clothing, location, lighting, expressions and posing can all help communicate that.

This is why I like to have a conversation before a branding shoot about what you're actually going to use the photographs for and the kind of image you're trying to create.

The photographs should feel like you, not like a generic musician photoshoot.

Creating more than just a headshot

Although a strong portrait is definitely useful, I'd never want you to leave a personal branding session with twenty photographs that all look almost identical.

Instead, we'll aim to create a range of images.

For example, we might photograph:

Close-up portraits

These can work particularly well for profile pictures, press features and social media.

Full-length photographs

These give you more flexibility for promotional material and can show more of your outfit and overall style.

Environmental portraits

Photographing you within a particular location can help tell more of your story and create images that feel less like traditional headshots.

Relaxed photographs

Not every photograph needs to be you looking directly at the camera.

Some of my favourite images are often the ones where clients are moving, laughing, looking away or simply being themselves.

Landscape images

These can be particularly useful for websites, banners and promotional graphics because there is more negative space around the subject.

Having this variety means that you can keep using your photographs long after the shoot has finished.

Where can you have musician branding photographs taken?

One of the best things about personal branding photography is that you don't have to be in a studio.

Whilst I have a photography studio in Tonbridge, outdoor and on-location shoots can work particularly well for musicians.

Depending on your style, we could photograph you:

  • Outdoors

  • Around your local area

  • In a studio

  • At your workplace or creative space

  • At a rehearsal space

  • In a recording environment

  • At a venue

  • In an urban setting

  • Somewhere that has meaning to you

The location can become part of the story.

For Eleanor, we chose the my studio and Shipbourne Common, which worked particularly well because she loves the outdoors, her music album blends pop, soul and influences gathered across a lifetime of music and she wanted some vibrant headshots that felt like her.

What should a musician wear for a branding photoshoot?

Your outfits can make a huge difference to the variety of your final gallery.

I normally recommend bringing a few different options, particularly if you want photographs that can be used over a longer period of time.

Think about the clothes you already wear and how you want to be represented as an artist.

You don't necessarily need to buy a completely new wardrobe for your photoshoot.

In fact, I'd much rather photograph you in something that feels like you.

You could bring:

  • Your usual stage or performance style

  • Something more casual

  • A favourite outfit

  • Different layers

  • Different accessories

  • Something more statement for a few creative images

Changing your outfit can completely change the feel of a photograph, which is a simple way of creating lots of variety during one session.

Personal branding photography doesn't have to feel corporate

I think this is particularly important for creatives.

The words "personal branding photography" can sometimes sound very corporate.

But it doesn't have to be.

For a musician, personal branding photography can be expressive, creative, colourful, unusual, relaxed or completely outside the box.

There isn't one correct way to do it.

The whole point is to create photographs that communicate who you are and what you create.

My approach is relaxed and collaborative, so we'll work together to figure out what feels right for you rather than putting you into a fixed set of poses.

FAQ

What is personal branding photography for musicians?

Personal branding photography for musicians is a collection of professional images designed to represent an artist's personality, style and music. Unlike a traditional headshot, a branding session can include a variety of portraits, locations, outfits and more relaxed images.

Do musicians need professional photographs?

Professional photographs can be useful for musicians who need images for websites, social media, press, promotional material, gig posters or music releases. Having a bank of photographs also means you don't have to use the same image every time you need to promote yourself.

Can musician photography be done outdoors?

Absolutely. Outdoor locations can work particularly well for musicians because they can help create a specific atmosphere and give the photographs more personality. The location can be chosen around your style and the type of imagery you want.

Can I bring different outfits to my branding session?

Yes! I actually recommend bringing a few different options if your session allows time for outfit changes. Different outfits can create completely different looks and give you more variety to use across your music and social media.

Where do you photograph musicians/artists in Kent?

I'm based in Tonbridge and photograph personal branding sessions in my studio as well as outdoors and at other locations across Kent. If you have a particular location in mind, get in touch and we can discuss whether it would work for your shoot.

Can I use my photographs for social media and my website?

Yes. Your branding photographs can be used across your website, social media, marketing and promotional material, depending on the agreed usage for your session.

How long does a personal branding photoshoot take?

This depends on how much variety you're looking for. A shorter session can work well if you only need a few updated portraits, while a longer session gives us more time for different outfits, locations and styles.
